Government Polytechnic Sheikhpura was established in 2016 by the Department of Science and Technology (DST), formerly known as the Department of Science, Technology & Technical Education (DSTTE), Government of Bihar, with the objective of developing an effective technical education system in the state. The institute is affiliated with the State Board of Technical Education (SBTE), Patna.

The institute possesses all the essential facilities required to grow as a centre of excellence in technical education. To ensure quality academic and research activities, the institute has well-qualified faculty members who are recruited through a rigorous selection process conducted by the Bihar Public Service Commission (BPSC).

The campus is equipped with efficient smart classrooms, well-equipped laboratories, a library with reading room facilities, and other modern amenities to enhance the technical knowledge and practical skills required for diploma engineers.

Admissions to the three-year Diploma courses are made through the Diploma Certificate Entrance Competitive Examination (DCECE) – Polytechnic Engineering (PE), conducted by the Bihar Combined Entrance Competitive Examination Board (BCECEB). Based on the DCECE merit list, eligible candidates participate in the online Polytechnic admission counselling conducted by BCECEB for admission to the first year of the Diploma programmes.
